Brett Mills, CPA/PFS
- Managing Partner
Brett joined the McCarthy, Rose & Mills, LLP accounting firm 16 years ago and was named managing partner in 2018. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Personal Financial Specialist (PFS), and was honored by CPA Practice Advisor as their 2016 40 Under 40 honoree. He also received a 2018 Standing Ovation from the AICPA for his exemplary professional achievement in personal financial planning. A Southern Methodist University graduate with an MIS degree, Brett previously worked as a software engineer for five years. Brett is passionate about identifying the people, processes and technologies that enable our clients to maximize success.
John B. Mills, Jr., CPA/PFS
John has served as Managing Partner at the McCarthy, Rose & Mills, LLP accounting firm for over 40 years. Previously, John worked at the Big Four accounting firm Ernst and Ernst (now known as EY) as an auditor after graduating from Texas Tech University. John holds three professional licenses – Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), and Personal Financial Specialist (PFS). John enjoys his career as a CPA as it allows him to develop longstanding, multi-generational relationships with clients in regards to the accounting, tax, and estate matters.
Susie Short, CPA
Susie began her career as an accounting and tax intern for a large local firm in Houston, Texas, while a student at Texas A&M University. After moving to Dallas, Susie concentrated in the tax area at Fox and Company, which is now the national CPA firm Grant Thornton. She also practiced in the private sector as a controller for a venture capitalist, managing the accounting for his six start-up companies. She joined her husband Don in 1986 at Short and Associates, PC. Susie is pleased to join McCarthy, Rose, and Mills, LLP, and continue her love of providing clients with a quality, professional product that they can understand and utilize.
Don Short, CPA
Don is the founder and manager of 35 years at Short & Associates P.C., which merged with McCarthy, Rose & Mills, LLP in 2018. Before starting his practice, Don worked in both public practice and investment banking as an auditor and management advisor. He earned his license as a Certified Public Accountant in 1979, after graduating from Texas Tech University in 1977. His favorite aspect of the profession is advising clients on structuring business opportunities to their greatest advantage. Don’s areas of concentration include real estate, professional services and hospitality operations.
Deborah A. Pritchard, B. Comm, EA
Deborah A Pritchard (B. Comm, EA) has been providing tax planning and preparation for individuals, partnerships, and corporations since 2000. Deborah’s expertise includes a wide range of tax issues and includes real estate partnerships, non-profits, and international taxation having lived in Canada, the UK, and the Netherlands.
Deborah completed her education in Canada at the University of Alberta School Business School which is ranked in the top 25 Business Schools in North America. Her career started in the Banking Industry focused on Internal Bank Auditing and Financial Services Management. This established a strong financial foundation and supported a move into joint venture accounting in the Oil and Gas Industry. After launching two separate and successful entrepreneurial efforts, she joined Kirkpatrick, Mathis & Brown LLC, a full service CPA firm.
These experiences have provided Deborah with a solid commercial foundation due to the range of perspectives acquired particularly while running her own business.
Of specific interest is Deborah’s focus on real estate partnerships. She has extensive experience in providing accounting, consulting and tax compliance services to real estate development and ownership projects. Through active participation in multiple real estate partnerships (6) Deborah developed specific expertise in the key tax considerations for participants in these opportunities and currently supports a range of real estate partnerships today.
Brian E. Lawyer, CPA
- Assurance Partner
Brian E. Lawyer, CPA, grew up in North Texas and began his public accounting career in 2005 at a regional accounting firm headquartered in Fort Worth, TX. He made the switch to Big 4 in 2012, where he spent five years at EY's Dallas office. Brian eventually took a break from public accounting to serve as the controller for a Dallas real estate company valued at over $6 billion.
After his employer sold the company, Brian started his own consulting business, reigniting his passion for client service, and ultimately bringing him to his dream job at MRM in Frisco, TX. He has a gift for understanding issues from his client's point of view and enjoys serving clients of all sizes, from small nonprofits to large publicly traded companies, and everything in between.
He has been a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) since 2007. His areas of expertise include assurance (audit and attestation), technical accounting (GAAP and SEC), financial reporting, fair value, and complex transactions. He has experience in several industries, including real estate, healthcare, manufacturing/distribution, not-for-profit, and employee benefit plans.
E. Carter Hatton, CPA

E. Carter Hatton, CPA, joined McCarthy, Rose & Mills, LLP in 2021. Carter graduated from Baylor University earning his Master of Accounting degree in 2003. Upon graduation, Carter worked his way up from tax associate to partner at Wagner, Eubank & Nicolos, LLP prior to their merger with Whitley Penn in 2017. Carter’s passion for client service stems from the dynamic and complex nature of public accounting that allows him to serve his clients' needs. His experience has been focused on partnerships, high-net-worth individuals, and trusts.
Andrew H. Clayton, CPA
- Assurance Manager
Andrew H. Clayton, CPA, began his public accounting career in 2009 at a small regional accounting firm in Shreveport, LA, after completing his education at Louisiana Tech University. He has been a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) since 2019. Andrew served as the Shreveport Chapter member of the Emerging CPA Council of the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants, whose mission was to engage, connect, promote, and aspire new CPAs and future CPAs. His areas of expertise are assurance (audit and attestation) and financial reporting. He has experience in several industries, including manufacturing/distribution, entertainment (movie audits), not-for-profit, and employee benefit plans. Andrew is excited to join MRM and is passionate about auditing and identifying ways to help clients grow and maximize their success.
